Safe Walk Initiative

Safe Slope’s Safe Walk initiative is a volunteer-based program providing free walks home to female- and LGBTQ-identified community members.

Announcing Changes to Safe Walk

We have moved to a reservation system. We ask that if you need a Safe Walk (on Thursdays between 8:00pm-1:00am and Fridays and Saturdays between 8:00pm-3:00am), please send us an email (safeslope@gmail.com), text us (347-709-8852), or leave us a voicemail (347-709-8852) by 6:00pm of the night you need a walk with the following information:

  • Your name;
  • Your phone number;
  • The approximate time you will need a Safe Walk (Your best guess. You may provide a window. No need to be exact);
  • The approximate location of pick-up and drop-off (Your best guess).

Once we have received your request, we will contact you to confirm the Safe Walk you have requested. We will provide you with names and photos of the Volunteer Pair who will be walking you home. That night, you will simply contact us when you finalize the time and location for your pick-up (for example, you can call us when you’re about to leave a location/get on the subway).

We hope you will consider arranging a Safe Walk as part of your routine when you make your nightly plans! We’re your neighbors and we’re here to help you get home safely.

Other Changes

  • While you must reserve a Safe Walk by 6:00pm of the night of your walk, you are welcome to request a Safe Walk days in advance if you choose to do so;
  • We can now expand our service to include the 36th Street R/N/D stop! We now service the following subway stops: 4th Ave - 9th Street F/G/R, 7th Ave F/G, 15th Street F/G, Prospect Ave R, 25th Street R, 36th Street R/N/D;
  • We are working to make our service bilingual. Moving forward, we will offer our flyers in Spanish and we will have Spanish-speaking volunteers available for the Safe Walk reservation system. Please stay tuned for more information;
  • In the event of any perceived or potential urgent danger (such as an increase in violence), we will ask all volunteers to be on alert and we will equip our system to allow for calls/requests after 6:00pm (i.e. you will be able to call right when you need a walk and don’t need to make a reservation). We will also do our best to alert the community of any patterns of violence and will be on “patrol” to provide information and Safe Walks

What Will Stay the Same

  • Safe Walk is a service for woman- and LGBTQ-identified individuals;
  • Safe Walk is way to get home safely by requesting a friendly volunteer pair who will escort you home;
  • Safe Walk operates on Thursday from 8:00pm to 1:00am, Friday from 8:00pm to 3:00am, and Saturday from 8:00pm to 3:00am.
