The vast majority of gender-based violence is not committed by strangers. It happens between people who know each other. Please join us at the Safe Home Project’s 18th Annual Domestic Violence Remembrance vigil tomorrow evening at 6:30pm outside of P.S. 321, 7th Ave and 1st Street, rain or shine.
Twenty memorial candles will be lit for those lost to domestic violence in Brooklyn alone from October, 2010 to October, 2011.
Join us in remembering these victims, raise awareness, and support domestic violence advocacy.
Following the candle-lighting and name reading we will proceed through the neighborhood behind the Safe Homes banner, in a silent procession ending at Park Slope United Methodist Church on the corner of 6th Ave and 8th Street. There we will have a musical performance by Gabriella Callender of Mahina Movement and hear from special speaker Dr. Adwoa Akhu, a survivor of domestic violence, and other invited guests, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, City Council Member Brad Lander, New York State Assemblyman James Brennan, and Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham.
